Chanthakuman (born 1799—died Aug. 23, 1870, Luang Prabang) was the ruler of the Lao kingdom of Luang Prabang who was confronted by increasingly serious local, regional, and international threats to his state’s survival. Chanthakuman was the second son of King Mangthaturat, and succeeded his elder brother Suk Soem (Souka-Seum) in 1852 as a vassal of the king of Siam. As king, Chanthakuman received several noted Western explorers, including Henri Mouhot, a French naturalist who arrived in 1861, and the mission of Doudart de Lagrée and Francis Garnier (later involved in French expansion in Tonkin, northern Vietnam), which reached Luang Prabang ...(100 of 203 words)
