Georg Waitz (born Oct. 9, 1813, Flensburg, Schleswig [now in Germany]—died May 24, 1886, Berlin, Ger.) was a German historian who was the founder of a renowned school of medievalists at the University of Göttingen. As the leading disciple of Leopold von Ranke’s critical methods, he is regarded as the ablest of the German constitutional historians; many consider him to be superior to his teacher in exactness of scholarship. Educated at the universities of Kiel and Berlin, Waitz was early influenced by Ranke.
