Godfrey Of Fontaines (born before 1250, Fontaines-les-Hozémont, Lower Lorraine—died after 1305, Paris) was a French Aristotelian philosopher and theologian prominent in the medieval controversy over faith versus reason that dominated the intellectual life of the University of Paris, then the academic centre of the West. At the Faculty of Arts in Paris, Godfrey studied with the Augustinian-Neoplatonist Henry of Ghent; with Siger of Brabant, the leading European follower of Averroës; and with St. Thomas Aquinas. After obtaining his master’s diploma in theology in 1285, Godfrey taught at the University of Paris almost continuously until 1304; during his last 13 years ...(100 of 356 words)
