Henry Garnett (born 1555, Heanor, Derbyshire, Eng.—died May 3, 1606, London) was an English Jesuit superior implicated in the Gunpowder Plot, an abortive conspiracy to destroy the Protestant king James I of England and Parliament while in assembly on Nov. 5, 1605, in retaliation for stricter penal laws against Roman Catholics. Garnett was raised in the Anglican faith but became converted to Roman Catholicism and in 1575 went to Rome, where he joined the Society of Jesus and became a professor of Hebrew at the Roman College.
