John bar Qursos (born 483—died 538, Antioch, Syria) was a monk and bishop of Tella (near modern Aleppo, Syria), a leading theological propagator of miaphysitism. A soldier before becoming a monk, John was made bishop in 519 and undertook the spread of a doctrine of Christ’s person and work common to Syrian and Egyptian monasticism, a belief derived from a beatifying inner experience of Christ’s divine transcendence. Attempting a mediatory theological formula, he rejected those positions he considered extreme.
