Maria Louise Pool (born Aug. 20, 1841, Rockland, Mass., U.S.—died May 19, 1898, Rockland) was an American writer whose sketches were well received in the period when the so-called local colour movement in American literature was just beginning. Pool attended public schools in her hometown of Rockland and for a time was herself a schoolteacher. By the age of 20 she had begun to publish stories in various magazines. She also wrote for a Philadelphia newspaper and, during her residence in Brooklyn, New York (1870–77), for the New York Tribune and the Evening Post.
