Columbus, city, seat (1857) of Platte county, eastern Nebraska, U.S., on the Loup River near its confluence with the Platte, about 85 miles (135 km) west of Omaha. Pawnee, Omaha, and Oto Indians were early inhabitants of the area. Columbus was founded in 1856 on the proposed railroad route by settlers from Columbus, Ohio. It became an outfitting post for westbound wagon trains with ferries on the river; the arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad (1866) contributed to its growth.
