Newark, city, seat (1808) of Licking county, central Ohio, U.S. It lies at the junctions of the North and South forks of the Licking River and of Raccoon Creek, 30 miles (48 km) east of Columbus. Laid out in 1802, the community of Newark was named for the New Jersey hometown of the first settlers, led by Gen. William C. Schenck.
