Bian Canal, historic canal running northwest-southeast through Henan, Anhui, and Jiangsu provinces of eastern China. The name was given to several different canals that connected the Huang He (Yellow River), north of Zhengzhou in Henan, with the Huai River and then, via the Shanyang Canal, with the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang) at Yangzhou, in Jiangsu. The terrain in the region is so flat and the drainage system so impermanent that no major engineering works were involved, apart from the labour needed to excavate new channels.
