Navajo language, North American Indian language of the Athabascan family, spoken by the Navajo people of Arizona and New Mexico and closely related to Apache. Navajo is a tone language, meaning that pitch helps distinguish words. Nouns are either animate or inanimate. Animate nouns may be “speakers” (humans) or “callers” (plants and animals); inanimate nouns may be corporeal or spiritual.
