The Franklin’s Tale, one of the 24 stories in The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. The tale told by the Franklin centres upon the narrative motif of the “rash promise.” While her husband, Arveragus, is away, Dorigen is assiduously courted by a squire, Aurelius. She spurns him but promises to return his love if he can accomplish the task of removing every rock from the coast of Brittany so that her husband may have a safe return from sea. With a magician’s help, Aurelius creates the illusion that the rocks have disappeared. Dorigen’s husband insists that she fulfill her promise. ...(100 of 139 words)
