pan, card game played only in the western United States, where it is popular as a gambling game in many clubs. It developed from conquian, the ancestor of rummy games. Eight standard 52-card decks from which the 8s, 9s, and 10s have been removed are used, with cards ranking in descending order K, Q, J, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, A. The game is best with 6 or 7 players, although as many as 15 may play. Each player is dealt 10 cards, in two batches of 5 cards.
